December 1901, Haute-Savoie.
In a steampunk alternate reality threatened by a conspiracy against humanity, Léopoldine and Lucca, two Double O humans with enhanced abilities, narrowly escape death in separate accidents before meeting at an inn in Haut Lac. Forced to stay there while they recover from their injuries, they soon realise that something deeply troubling is happening in the seemingly quiet mountain village.
As they uncover evidence of a plot to contaminate the world with xenolith, they join forces to prevent a new mutation of Regular humans. Their investigation will take them through snowy mountains, dangerous pursuits and violent snowstorms, as they race to stop the catastrophe that threatens humanity. Though they could hardly be more different, their unexpected alliance may also bring them closer together, allowing a bond to develop that neither of them could ever have imagined…

About the author: A lifelong lover of Montmartre, Mip Ruberto Sanquer lived there for around twenty years, and it was this much-loved neighbourhood that provided the setting for the plot of La Ville de braises et de crocs, which was shortlisted for the 2024 Actusf Uchronia Prize. Today, she draws inspiration from La Rochelle, where she loves to breathe in the sea air while walking her dog. She returns home refreshed and ready to write, with a good pot of tea always by her side through every part of her life: writing, family and tea-time with friends.
